almost 2 years ago: ST. PETERSBURG - JULY 30: Owner Stuart Sternberg of the Tampa Bay Rays talks with Sean Rodriguez #1 just before the start of the game against the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field on July 30 2010 in St. Petersburg Florida. (Photo by J. Meric/Getty Images)
It's taken a long time for St. Pete major Bill Foster and Rays owner Stuart Sternberg to settle on another meeting, but it looks like they have finally settled on a date. The news came out a day or so ago that they had agreed to a meeting, and now the Tampa Bay Times and Tampa Tribune are reporting that they will sit down on January 17th to discuss the Rays stadium situation.
I wouldn't hold your breath, though. There's no reason to believe Foster will dramatically change his stance from the past, and we know it's not in the Rays' best interest to get a new stadium in St. Pete. The two sides are having a dialogue, which is better than the alternative, but I don't see any reason to get our hopes up.
On an interesting note, the Times article notes that the St. Pete city council can overrule Foster and change the terms of the city's agreement with the Rays...but only if they get six of their eight members to vote for those changes. If Foster continues to be intractable and mysterious, it's possible the city council could get fed up with him and take matters into their own hands. Doubtful, but possible.
In other Rays-related news, the Rays signed Cuban shortstop Joel Barroso to a minor league deal yesterday. Rays Digest found some YouTube videos of him, but that is quite literally the extent of my knowledge about Barroso. There's very little information out there on the interwebs about him, so it's difficult to say if he's a legit prospect or merely org filler. Considering that most exciting Cuban prospects receive a large deal of public fanfare, I'm going to assume it's the later...but at the same time, who knows?

I found something in Farnsworth's numbers that makes me more optimistic about Rodney.
Farnsworth dropped his fastball % by around 10% last year to success.

Speaking of Shortstops
Starling Castro plays the role of horrible human being:
So far we know that she “allegedly” left a bar with him at 3 a.m., passed out, woke up at 5:30 a.m. as she was being sexually assaulted, and went to the hospital.

Sounds like a similar sort of report as with Josh Lueke.
Horrible all the way around. However this goes from here, it’s not gonna end well.

Can Neil Allen
work the same magic with Archer that he did with Moore? Let’s hope.

About pitches down the middle
Interesting heat graphs.
Orel Hersheiser gave one of the bests lessons about pitching during one of his broadcasts.
He said that a pitcher wants the hitter to swing, he’d love for the hitter to swing at his pitch and put it in play, and he’d love to do this in order to work deep into games. He said that the key to everything is Height and Width. He says a good pitch will give the hitter 1 of these 2 options…but never both.

Just wonder???
How many would object to the Rays signing Manny to a AAA contract?
Are the Rays the type of organization to move beyond the distraction and travesty of the 2011 Manny and allow him to play in Durham until the 50 game suspension is up and then have the resolve to add him back to a Major League clubhouse?
MrNegative1 - January 6, 2012
I think it comes down to the actual players on the Rays team.
He was supposed to help lead the team last year, to be a big bat in the middle of the lineup. The team counted on him, and I am sure the players did a little too. However, he cheated on them, earning his 100 day suspension. On top of that, instead of manning up and serving the suspension, he quit, retiring and leaving the players with that. It obviously had to have angered some of the players on the team, and I believe that is the reason they can’t bring him back.
Sure, I still believe he has something left in the tank. I just don’t think you can bring him back on the Rays,
mr. maniac - January 6, 2012
I don't see any scenario where the Rays are Manny's 'best fit' for '12
sternfan1 - January 6, 2012
i dont disagree with this either
rglass44 - January 6, 2012
not a pick to click
FreeZorilla - January 6, 2012
Not 100% sure but...
He wouldn’t be able to play AAA ball either during this suspension. Extended Spring Training is probably a different story.
CubFanRaysaddict - January 6, 2012
I'm sure MrNeg is well aware Manny won't be playing baseball at any level during the suspension
sternfan1 - January 6, 2012
under the old CBA
a player could play the last 10 days in the minors to get ready.
Manny played 3 in High A and 2 in AAA before reporting back to the Dodgers.
MrNegative1 - January 6, 2012
The comment really doesn't read like that at all

there is a very, very, very slim chance id extend archer prior to arb. even if he does "figure it out."
and im one of the biggest archer fans here.
rglass44 - January 6, 2012
Seems to me that he feels being ripped off with a cheap contract is an honor.
mr. maniac - January 6, 2012
I'd have to think a while on it.
His comments about Moore just brought it to mind, but yeah, that’s a valid question.
Steve Slowinski - January 6, 2012
pitchers are such huge gambles it just seems silly to waste it on a guy with so many "?s."
rglass44 - January 6, 2012
maybe we give the long term deal to Sale?
sternfan1 - January 6, 2012
if he "figures it out," then i absolutely would.
great make-up and a skillset that gets overvalued in arb. and FA.
rglass44 - January 6, 2012
Eh, it's a huge hypothetical anyway.
It’s really impossible to say at this point, since it’s not exactly imminent.
Steve Slowinski - January 6, 2012
true dat!
rglass44 - January 6, 2012
Joel Barrosco
From that first video of one at bat, I see plate discipline and poor contact (take-take-take-take-whiff).
Anyone else with better scouts eyes care to comment on his swing from the BP in the second video?
Whelk - January 6, 2012
One AB? Really?
If all we had on Josh Wilson was his one AB v Shields back in ‘10, you’d swear he was the next Pujols
sternfan1 - January 6, 2012
Perhaps the mariners can sell him to a Cuban team, then.
We have to make this information shortage work both ways, or else the Communists will win.

When will hear the Magglio Ordonez rumors and the Rays?
sternfan1 - January 6, 2012
This is a terrific sentence.
Hatfield - January 6, 2012
SternfanYoda
Wise one he is
Jason Collette - January 6, 2012
I started it a few weeks ago,
If Ordonez is healthy and wants to play again he would make an excellent DH for the Rays come ST…especially if AF didn’t feel comfortable at that point. At 1-2 million with maybe some incentives it could be a nice move. Manny wasn’t signed last year to DH until Jan.24th.
budman3 - January 7, 2012
not there yet, but ESPN's Olney paints the Mets and Nationals as two teams to watch
Personally I would prefer Duda, but if the Mets are willing to part with one of their young hitters for pitching, this is a scenario worth playing out.
LaRoche, if healthy could be a cheap option, or if the Rays would be willing to consider moving Upton, they might be able to do some sort of swap for Morse. Adding Upton allows the Nats to keep Werth out of center and upgrades their defense. Morse has more years of team control, so I can see why the Rays might be willing to do something like that. All depends on how much of a “outlier” season people believe Morse had, or how likely he is to repeat it or come close to it.

Don't worry about Foster
He will explain to $tu that he has a plan, but it’s a secret and he’s not telling. And if $tu doesn’t like it, Foster will just stomp his feet and leave the room. He will let put himself on a time-out and will not be able to meet again until 2013.

Rizzo to the Cubs
RT @fantasy411: #Cubs today acquired Anthony Rizzo and RHP Zach Cates from #Padres for right-handed pitcher Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na.

so we could have had him for like torres and morrison
